April 2024
League Finals were held on Thursday, April 25th at District Field and what a finish! Dylan Ochoa went undefeated in the Valle Vista League for both the 200 & 400-Meter Dashes, qualifying for the CIF Prelims to be held of May 4th. He also anchored his 4x100M Relay team to bring in a 3rd place win which also qualifies all 4 racers (Elijah Marin-Ortiz, Matthew Cortez, Joseph Lopez, Dylan Ochoa) to compete again in CIF Prelims. Zachary "Zak" Carter qualified for CIF Prelims in two events; taking 2nd Place in Pole Vault & 3rd Place in Discus! Phoenix Raso is headed to CIF Prelims in Discus! Aria Burrola in the 400-Meter Dash & 4x400M Relay, Genesis Sanchez also in the 400-Meter Dash & 4x400M Relay + the 300M Hurdles! Audrey Altamirano & Alyssa Corona round out the girl's 4x400M Relay team. The BIG NEWS of the day was Sophomore Djamila "DJ" Franklin who Pole Vaulted to a soaring 11' and took 1st in the girl's Varsity division to move on to CIF Prelims, extending her school record + setting a NEW Valle Vista League Finals Meet RECORD! She also qualified for CIF Prelims with a 3rd place in the Triple Jump! Amazing job Vikings! And congratulations to all the 2024 athletes who helped make this a fantastic year, Northview cannot compete without you! ____________________________________________________________________________ Valle Vista League Prelims were held on April 23rd at District Field. Quite a few Vikings are advancing to the finals! Notable performances were Dylan Ochoa breaking yet another Varsity record, this time the 200-Meter Dash with a 21.83, Phoenix Raso taking 2nd in the Discus, Joseph Lopez taking 1st Place in both the 100 Meters & 200 Meters in the Frosh/Soph Boys division. More to come at the League Finals! ____________________________________________________________________________ Only one athlete, Dylan Ochoa, qualified for the prestigious Mt. SAC Invitational held on April 20th @ Mt. San Antonio College! He CRUSHED his current school record with a blazing 47.11 seconds in the 400-meter dash to take 1st place for the meet! This makes Dylan ranked #1 in the entire State of California! Way to go, Dylan! ____________________________________________________________________________ The final League meet was held at District Field on April 17th where Northview competed against Covina & Charter Oak in separately scored meets. Northview boy's and girl's Varsity came out on top against Charter Oak but fell short of defeating Covina. The Boys Varsity finished with a record of 3 - 2 while the Girl's Varsity had a record of 1 - 4 for the 2024 season. Returning Junior and Sophomore athletes should give Northview a good chance at coming out as League Champions in the 2025 season. Sophomore Djamila "DJ" Franklin extended her Long Jump record to 16' 3" and Dylan Ochoa broke the 100-meter dash record with an electronic timing of 10.98, though his official hand-timed school record will still be 10.78! Zachary "Zak" Carter had a personal best 11' 6" in the Pole Vault to take 1st Place and Phoenix Raso had a solid 115' 11.5" in the discus to give her 1st place as well. With League Finals next week, Northview looks like they will finish strong and send a lot of athletes to the C.I.F. Prelims! Go Northview! ____________________________________________________________________________ The San Gabriel Valley Championships Invitational was held at District Field on April 13th . Standouts were Dylan Ochoa who scored 10 points in the Varsity 100 & 200 Meters, Phoenix Raso who too 1st Place in the Varsity Discus, DJ Franklin who led the girl's F/S with 23 points and Gary Strobehn who led the boy's F/S with 11 points! Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate and it began to rain around 5pm so the meet was called off just after 6pm with a few field events still undetermined, though the running races continued. It has been one wet season, thus far! March 2024
Rain, rain, go away! The 31st Annual Covina Invitational was held on April 29-30 @ District Field. It was a beautiful day on the 29th when Varsity Pole Vault & some of the throws took place. DJ Franklin beat the boy's Varsity vaulters! On the 30th, limited races were held and all the field events were cancelled due to rain. ____________________________________________________________________________ In Northview's only home meet, Boy's Varsity brought home another win over San Dimas on Thursday, March 28th with a score of 77 - 57! Girls Varsity fell 37 - 99 though DJ Franklin extended her pole vault record in both Sophomore & Varsity divisions with a 10' vault! She now holds all 3 school Pole Vault records; Freshman, Sophomore & Varsity! Way to go DJ! Boys point leaders were Zak Carter with 15 and Dylan Ochoa at 11.25! Dylan is undefeated in the 200-meter & 400-meter races this year and has the fastest times in the Valle Vista League. Way to go Vikings! Keep it up! ____________________________________________________________________________ Northview competed in a League Meet vs. Diamond Ranch @ Diamond Ranch HS on Thursday, March 21st. Caleb McKendrick brought home the most points with 16.25 in 4 events; 110M & 300M Hurdles, the Triple Jump and helped in the 4x400M Relay! Dylan Ochoa took first in the 100M & 200M sprints and also was on the winning 4x400M Relay team. Zak Carter contributed 10 points by getting 1st in the Shot Put & High Jump. No Pole Vault or Discus contests were held, unfortunately. This led to a victory for the boys Varsity squad while the girl's Varsity came up short in points. ____________________________________________________________________________ At The Qualifier Invitational on Saturday, March 16th several records were broken. Dylan Ochoa extended his 400-meter record to 47.89 seconds and Djamila "DJ" Franklin secured the girl's Sophomore Long Jump record with a distance of 15' 11.5"! Congratulations record breakers! ____________________________________________________________________________ Northview took on last year's League Champions, West Covina, at West Covina's stadium on March 14th. A perfect 20 points was earned by Zak Carter with four 1st Place finishes in the Discus, Shot Put, Pole Vault and High Jump! New records were set by Dylan Ochoa in the 100-meter varsity boys division with a hand-timed blazing score of 10.78 seconds! Phoenix Raso smashed the Varsity girl's Discus record with a whopping 121' 1" throw! DJ Franklin set the new Sophomore girl's 100-meter record with a hand-timed 13.03 seconds and increased her Triple Jump record a few more inches with a 32' 8.5"! While these new records and earned points were fantastic, they were not enough to overcome the West Covina team this year. Next time, Vikings! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Annual Covina-Valley District Meet on March 7, 2024, was CANCELED due to a thunderstorm. Unfortunately, there is no make-up date available. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Colt Classic Invitational was held on March 3, 2024, at District Field. The weather was cool with intermittent rain and 22 schools were in attendance! There were plenty of opportunities with the Boys & Girls Varsity and underclassmen got to compete in the Frosh/Soph division. Zak Carter came away with the only Boy's Varsity point when he placed 6th in the discus with a throw of 117' 7". The Girl's Varsity scored 22 points, led by DJ Franklin with 12 points who also broke the Sophomore Triple Jump Record with a leap of 32' 4.5"! Northview's first official track meet was the Webb Invitational on Saturday, February 24th at the Webb Schools in Claremont. Girl's Varsity took 2nd overall with 111 points. Standout performances by Genesis Sanchez who also broke the Sophomore 100m Hurdle record (See "School Records" page) and DJ Franklin who took home the sophomore pole vault record. Both will break more records throughout the season! The boy's Varsity finished 3rd overall with 80 points.
